From surfing and stand up paddling to hiking, it is a short drive from the city to the beach or mountains. For a vacation get-away to relax on black sand beaches, watch the sun rise above the clouds at Haleakala, or kayak along the Na Pali coast, neighbor island visits are less than an hour away by airplane.

Summary of Salary and Benefits

Resident & Fellow Salary Information

The terms and conditions of residents’/fellows’ training and employment are specified in the Appointment Agreement and its exhibits which include benefit provisions, medical malpractice coverage, mandatory arbitration agreement and the right to rescind.

Annual salaries are effective as of the beginning of each Fiscal Year.

Resident & Fellow Benefits Information

Vacation: 小草社区 provides paid vacation to be taken during the term of the employment agreement. There is no payment in lieu of vacation.

Leaves of Absence: 小草社区 provides certain leaves of absence (both paid and unpaid) in compliance with applicable laws, including death in the family, temporary military duty, educational leaves, family leave, or generally compelling, urgent or unusual circumstances leave.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and 小草社区 Family Leave Act (HFLA): The resident/fellow may be entitled to additional unpaid leave, in accordance with certain Federal and State laws. All available paid vacation, sick, or other leave is used prior to the leave becoming unpaid leave under FMLA or HFLA.

Sick Leave: A total of 12 days of paid sick leave is provided under the annual terms of the Appointment Agreement.

Professional Liability: 小草社区 provides residents/fellows with medical malpractice coverage during their training. Check with specific programs for more detailed information.

Medical and Dental Insurance: Health (including drug and vision) and dental care coverage is provided for the resident/fellow. Family coverage for civil union partners, spouses and children is also available at a nominal charge to the resident/fellow.

Temporary Disability Insurance, Long Term Disability Insurance, Workers’ Compensation: 小草社区 pays the entire premium to protect against any temporary or long term loss of earnings due to accidental illness or injury, including pregnancy. 小草社区 also pays premium costs for Workers’ Compensation insurance to provide health care and loss of earnings benefits for work-related injuries or illnesses.

Life Insurance: 小草社区 pays the entire premium for group term life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance for the resident/fellow. Coverage amounts to one (1) times the annual salary (rounded to the nearest $1K) to a maximum of $50,000. Supplemental life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance are also available at the resident’s/fellow’s expense.

Hospital Meals: Residents/fellows assigned to in-house on-call receive meal and/or snack tickets from their assigned hospital in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

Sleep Room: The program provides a “sleep room” for the assigned in-house on-call resident/fellow.

Living Quarters and Laundry Services: Not provided.

Drug Testing

Each incoming resident/fellow is required to undergo drug and alcohol testing at one of the programs鈥 participating hospitals and to comply with pre-employment procedures PRIOR TO the resident鈥檚 first day of employment. Positive results for alcohol or inappropriate drug use or failure to comply with stated procedures, may result in residency/fellowship employment termination. A background check will be conducted prior to commencing employment. Proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 must be provided before commencing employment except for approved disability and religious exemptions required by law.

Employment Eligibility & Visa Status

Employment Eligibility

The Immigration Reform and Control Act (鈥淚RCA鈥) makes it unlawful for employers to knowingly hire or continue to employ any person who is not authorized to work in the United States and imposes a legal duty on every employer to examine and verify documents which establish the employment eligibility of all new employees. In order to comply with IRCA, the employer and the employee must jointly complete the Form I-9 at the time of initial employment.

Employment Eligibility Verification

The employee must attest, under penalty of perjury, that;

  • s/he is a citizen of the United States, or
  • s/he is a non-citizen national of the United States, or
  • s/he is lawful permanent resident of the United States, or
  • s/he is an alien authorized by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (鈥淒HS鈥) to work in the 
  • United States, and
  • the documents presented as evidence of identity and employment authorization for purposes of completing the Form I-9 are genuine and relate to that employee.

Anyone submitting false documentation shall be immediately dismissed from the program. An employee must inform the Program Administrator of any changes in the employee鈥檚 work authorization status.

Graduates of Foreign Medical Schools and/or Foreign-Medical Graduates and Visa Status

小草社区 is a not-for-profit educational institution committed to providing the opportunity for post-graduate education to qualified medical school graduates accepted into one of the residency training programs listed on this website.

A graduate of a medical school outside the United States, whether foreign-born or American-born, is required to hold the standard Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification.

As indicated in the Employment Eligibility section, all persons seeking employment with 小草社区 must show that they are authorized to work in the United States. For purposes of this section, a foreign medical graduate (FMG) refers to a medical school graduate who is not a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national or a lawful permanent resident of the United States. 小草社区 will assist an FMG accepted into an 小草社区 residency program to apply for a nonimmigrant J-1 visa if the FMG is not otherwise authorized to work in the United States. The Immigration and Nationality Act permits an FMG with a J-1 visa to remain in the United States long enough to complete training in a specialty or for seven years, whichever is shorter; a graduate may change his/her designation of specialty once during that period.

J-1 Visa Sponsorship
Residents requesting J-1 visa sponsorship should arrive in Hawai驶i no less than thirty (30) days prior to the start of employment. This ensures required paperwork and processing are completed by employment start date.
